Astrid Vang-Pedersen

Astrid Vang-Pedersen is a choral conductor and concert designer. She has developed a specific method on staging choral performance named Concert Design and finished her thesis on the subject in 2018, a project created in collaboration with The Royal Danish Academy of Music and Roskilde University. She is the artistic director of the vocal ensemble Dopplers which focuses on embodied, theatrical and communicative performance of vocal music, while she also facilitates workshops on the subject, teaches choral conducting and composes music for choirs and theater productions. She has initiated the collaborative choir project Ubuntusong, where choir singers from around the world promote cross cultural understanding through song. The project debut was a tribute to the legacy of Nelson Mandela and the South African philosophy Ubuntu, released in 2018.

How do you create a compelling storyline, a convincing stage design and a captivating vocal music performance? This lecture helps you reflect on this question by introducing Concert Design. Concert Design is a conceptual and practical approach to designing embodied, aesthetic and communicative choral music performances developed by Ph.D. Astrid Vang-Pedersen.The Concert Design Concept provides methods to reflect on the concert situation as an event and tools for singers to expand their skills as performers. In this combined lecture and workshop, The Concert Design Concept will be introduced and illustrated, through a number of examples of designs and exercises, providing insight into the craft of designing choral performances through creative choices regarding visual elements, storytelling and choreographies.
